GOAL OF ORGANIZING
The most common misconception people have about organizing their home is “perfection”. The actual Goal of Organizing is progress and not perfection. You should be able to walk into your home and not feel stressed. Instead of minding all the clutter, you should feel glad to be home so you can tend to all the things that matter most. Is a clutter free home important to you? Here are 4 tips to help you get started.
VISUALIZE YOUR SPACE
Think about how you want your declutterred space to look and feel. For instance, does the lamp you’ve had since college still fit your vision? Maybe it’s time to let a few things go. If you know why you’re holding onto something it will make it easier to let it go.
SET ASIDE TIME
Understand that it won’t happen overnight. Start small to avoid decision fatigue. When you complete a smaller project first, you’ll see how good it feels and that sets you up for bigger projects that might take more time.
HAVE A PLAN
Write a list of what areas you want to declutter. Decide what rooms you want to complete each week or month. It will seem more manageable when you break each task down. And it’s always a bonus to cross something off your decluttering check list!
DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH ITEMS NO LONGER NEEDED
Remember, items that get declutterred are either donated, recycled, sold or trash. There are many different donation sites that take a variety of items. Call first if you’re unsure of what they are willing to take.
Building and establishing good decluttering habits now will help you to maintain the calm order you want for your home. However, staying organized is an ongoing journey. It’s not a one and done. You will need to provide some maintenance decluttering from time to time. With Spring right around the corner (I think) this is a great time to jump start your Spring organizing and decluttering projects!
